Women at the banks of river (After Gauguin) 2023

Following in the logic that artist Paul Gauguin (1846 - 1903) may have been inspired by photographs of Sāmoar as a foundational reference for his major paintings, artist Yuki Kihara has assembled an uncanny, hybrid pairing between Gauguin paintings and landscape photographs of the Sāmoan archipelago taken by Sydney-based photographer Charles Kerry (1857 - 1928) where the silhouette of the landscapes seamlessly connect between the painting and the photograph. There are no archival records that can prove that Gauguin and Kerry ever met or knew of each other's work.
