Two Posters Promoting Safe Sex Practices

Both produced in relation to the impact of the AIDS epidemic on the Pacific community. Like Our Ancestors was produced by the New Zealand AIDS Foundation in 1998 and designed by Arjan Hoeflak, Mariano Vivanco and Harold Samu, promoting the message 'love safely'. Queens of the Pacific promotes safe sex with mermaids surrounded by a garland of frangipani. These two posters form part of artist Yuki Kihara's archive tracing queer Pacific histories, especially since in 1998, when Sāmoan administrators preparing to host the South Pacific Games issued a ban on homosexual activity.
